Coorg, or Kodagu, as it is better known, abounds in misty forests and green hills interspersed with coffee plantations. But picturesque views aside, Coorg houses some incredible wildlife as well. If you have a penchant for sighting animals within their natural habitats, this region won't disappoint.

You don't have to be an expert. Just come with your curiosity and perhaps a pair of binoculars. This is a step-by-step guide to the wild life of Coorg - what to see and where to go.

1. Nagarhole National Park – For Big Animals and Jungle Safaris

Nagarhole is one of the most popular wildlife parks around Coorg. It's part of a larger forest inhabited by tigers, elephants, leopards, and sloth bears. You might not spot a tiger on every visit, but elephants are usually seen around waterholes.

The park also has many birds. Keep an eye out for the Malabar trogon and the great Indian hornbill. Safaris are usually held early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

Where: About 90 minutes from Madikeri.

Best for: Big animals and birdwatching.

Tip: Book the safari in advance and carry a jacket, it gets chilly in the morning.

2. Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary – Peaceful and Full of Birds

This haven is less populated, so it's ideal for peaceful nature strolls. You can catch a glimpse of barking deer, giant squirrels, and lion-tailed macaques. It's also ideal for birdwatchers.

The forest is dense and lush, and you'll hear the birds more often than you see them. Nilgiri wood pigeon and grey-headed bulbul are often seen here.

Where: Approximately 75 km from Madikeri.

Best for: Hiking and spotting unusual birds.

Tip: Get a local guide—local people are familiar with the forest.

3. Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary – Hills, Forests, and Elephants

Brahmagiri is on the Karnataka-Kerala border. The forest here is a combination of evergreen trees and misty hills. You can trek here and have a chance to see elephants, monkeys, and even civet cats.

This is also where the Iruppu Falls, famous for that matter, lies. So, you get a small trek and perhaps some wildlife sightings as well.

Where: Near Iruppu Falls, 80 km from Madikeri.

Best for: Treks and elephant spotting.

Tip: Not during heavy rainfall, slippery.

4. Around Coffee Estates – Wildlife at Your Doorstep

You do not necessarily have to venture deep into the forest to catch a glimpse of animals. There are many homestays and resorts in Coorg, which are near nature. If you take a walk in the morning around the coffee plantations, you may catch a glimpse of deer, wild boars, or even flying squirrels.

Birds such as woodpeckers, drongos, and kingfishers are not difficult to spot. Some also receive elephants visiting them at night!

Where: Throughout Coorg, particularly along forest fringes.

Best for: Leisurely wildlife observation.

Tip: Early morning is the ideal time to sight animals and birds.
